Phase One
Stacy could hear the distant
applaud rolling in the background, with a casual smile and a blank impression
on her face; she stared through the window into the horizon, buying time to
catch her feet.
It was like any regular
evening and everything was going just as it should, but deep down stacy was in
a cold war against this sinister feeling that had suddenly engulfed her.
Though nothing bad had
happened yet and there was no grounds for the fear and suspicion that griped
her, she was sure her instincts has never failed her and definitely wasn't
about to. Why wasn't she just in her mood this very evening, she wasn't
supposed to be sitting up here all alone while everyone else was busy having a
nice time and enjoying themselves in Uncle Ben's anniversary party.
Uncle Ben had been like a
father to her from day one, and his wife late Kate, (ever lovely and caring
lady Kate) who picked George from the streets where he was living off meal
tickets and doing odd jobs just to pay for his University education. Thinking
about George and how they had made it through had time together made her
shudder into tears.
He was a lovely, hardworking
and determined young fellow ( obviously why she fell in love with him almost at
first sight) who had never missed an opportunity to put a smile on her face.
Finally they were going to be together, just like he had promised her six years
ago when they met in the university, out of his love for her he had scheduled their wedding for tomorrow (New year's evening ).
All she ever wanted was to
tie the knot with George, but don’t know if she was prepared for it or not.
Their wedding was in less than 24 hours time and yet here he was at Uncle Ben's
20th wedding anniversary running around like an errand boy, he hasn't even
noticed that she had disappeared for close to an hour now. George had promised
to stop by this his mummy's boy attitude of he's towards the Ben ikeji family
when he proposed to her almost a year ago and so far it had proven to be the
one promise he couldn't fulfill.
Lying in bed, she could think of nothing
else but George, not even the constant giggles and laughter from her friends in
the next room ( who had come to keep her company) could not interupt her drift
into hallucination. She was completely invisible, staring deep into herself and
reminiscing over thoughts that were gradually taking breath away from her.
The
IKEJI family have been of great help to George of which he should be eternally
grateful, being the child they never had was not too much for appreciation, but
putting them ( especially Uncle Ben ) as utmost priority at her own expense was
definitely not what she bargained for. Before proposing to her George had
informed Uncle Ben of his intentions ( to her own irritation ), and even when
she accepted to marry him, he went ahead to disclose their private wedding and
honeymoon plans to lady Kate and as if the IKEJI family knew how much she hated
it, they started engaging George more often than they used to, calling him at
odd hours and getting him to do office work when he was supposed to be spending
time with his wife to be.
Now, few hours to their wedding, George cancelled his
bachelor's party just to attend their 20th wedding anniversary ( and the George
she knew wouldn't trade anything for that party). As if he just wanted to spite
her, he also decided to stay back after the party to do what he called “a few
finishing touches”, what the hell was wrong with George, is he ever going to
grow some balls and man up for once in his life?, Couldn't he just say he was
tired and needed time to prepare for his own wedding rather than sit back and
do after party meetings at someone else's wedding anniversary. All these
thoughts flashed through Stacy's mind, making her doubt the “ happily ever
after” married life she had always dreamt of. She wasn't sure she was going to
have the courage to say “ I do ” when the time comes. Shaking these thoughts
off her mind she resolved to remain positive and hope for the best. It was
already twelve minutes past midnight when she looked at the clock, almost
immediately, she closed her eyes and was drifted into wonder land.
After what seemed like forever, Stacy
finally opened her eyes, by her countenance one could tell that she had drifted
in the opposite direction to wonder land. She had just awakened from the worst
nightmare of her life, dreams after dreams, of doves in the church and the
sanctuary ablaze, dreams where the presiding minister was a mommy wrapped in
sack clothe.
She was in a fix, not sure of what to do or how to feel, as
haunted as the dreams she had were, she was most terrified when in the last one
the Reverend asked her to take her vows, lo and behold, standing before her was
Uncle Ben.
Terrified, she sprang to her feet, hoping she hadn't overslept and
missed her own wedding. She looked at the clock, and to her amazement it was
just 12:30 am, shock of her life. What the hell was going on, was it the clock
or was her mind playing games with her. She picked up her keys and ran
downstairs making, her friends run after her.
She was in her car in no time and
hit the road before anyone could get close enough to find out where the hell
she was off to at this hour. Driving down town her mind was occupied by the
events of the previous night, by her dreams, the fact that she saw herself
standing on the alter with Uncle Ben instead of George whom she loved an
cherished so much.
Close to tears, she pulled up at Ben's apartment ( where she
had come a few hours ago with her fiance for some God forsaken wedding
anniversary ). Determined to find answers to her ever growing curiosity she
made to enter the building, but on a second thought she changed her mind,
George couldn't possibly still be here by past midnight, she was going to drive
straight to his house hold him in her arms and cry her fears to him.
Whether it
was bad luck to spend the night together on your wedding eve, she was ready to
damn the consequences, all she wanted now was to empty herself in George's arms
away from all the tears and scares of life.
